Digital Fabrication: Hard as wood Soft as fabric
The panel will include two amazing architects with a great background in digital fabrication and manufacturing. With the 4th industrial revolution, the world started to integrate technology with the use of natural materials as a way of raising the awareness of sustaining more resources, time, cost, and money. "Hard as wood, Soft as fabric" is the title of the panel where it discusses treating with contrast materials, techniques, and processes. The know-how of the process becomes more important than just getting a complex form. The panel will present some works of Hesham Shawqy and Rebal Jber related to digital fabrication and the process of doing not only the results. This will pave the road for others to start merging different disciplines and think about integrating them in their field innovatively.

Deena El-Mahdy
Deena is assistant professor at the architectural engineering department at the British University in Egypt and associate director of Farouk El-Baz center of sustainability and future studies. She get her MSc. and Ph.D from Cairo University. With a strong belief in the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry, her research focuses on vernacular architecture, digital materialization, additive manufacturing techniques, and augmented reality in construction. Deena’s mission is trying to integrate additive manufacturing techniques in the construction by using local materials differently to reach a sustainable community. She won several awards in entrepreneurship and was shortlisted at Tamayouz Award for Women of Excellence in Architecture and Construction and Mohamed Makiya award in 2020.
Rebal Jaber
An Architect and multidisciplinary designer who is seeking beauty through cutting edge technology. he aim to stay curious and continue to push his understanding of form and automation, using Parametric design to engage, empower, and transform across multiple disciplines and scales. With a focus on creating a narrative between algorithms inspired from nature – digital Fabrication and using local materials He sees the potential of wood and efficient use of natural materials through computational design when used smartly and he believes that groundbreaking technology has a vital contribution to the built environment. right now he is working on couple of residential buildings trying his best to deliver nex experience of emergent formation into the MENA region
Hesham Shawqy
Hesham Shawqy is an architect, currently a master student at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, he is computational designer and researcher focusing on parametric design and digital fabrication, graduated from Ain Shams University in 2016. He is a tutor, having taught more than 300 people so far, his organization, Ingraft is considered to be one of the most advanced parametric design training platforms in Egypt. He is the author of various computationally designed real projects and competitions. In the past, he has worked on a range of design projects varies from products, historical documentation, museums, products, exhibitions and housing. He taught courses related to computational design and digital fabrication at the American University in Cairo, and Ain Shams University.
